What does an editor do besides proofread and add commas?

Great editors are obsessed less with commas and
semi-colons than with readers and their ability to
comprehend the written word as effortlessly as possible.

An editor was tasked to reword the following
prose into a more-impassioned effort:

It was all he could do to keep himself from grabbing her by her
shoulders and shouting at her. "What are you doing?" he asked.
"What do you want from me?" he shouted. He could not believe that
this was anything so simple as an attraction between a man and
a woman. It had been far too long since he trusted in those
things between himself and a woman such as her.


The revised paragraph read:

It was all he could do to keep from grabbing her by the shoulders
and shouting, ‘What are you doing? What do you want from me?’
He could not believe this was simply an attraction between a man
and a woman. It had been too long since he trusted those emotions.

The right words make all the difference.
